Why do we use inlays and onlays?

Recommended for larger cavities where a filling may not be suitable, an inlay or onlay is used to repair the tooth’s biting surface and is generally made from composite or porcelain which is a strong and natural looking material.
 

What are dental inlays or onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorations made by the dental laboratory that fill a cavity in a tooth restoring its shape and appearance. They are commonly made from tooth coloured material, but can be made in gold alloy where high strength is necessary. We use composite (gradia) and porcelain (E-Max) materials and occasionally gold alloy. The results are good and generally are better than with rebuilding with tooth coloured filling materials where there is a lot of natural tooth missing. Better shape can be achieved by a dental technician and therefore better appearance. The inlay (or onlay) is cemented in place with a very strong dental adhesive. Occasionally they can become unstuck, but they can be re-cemented in place if this happens and there is no other damage to the tooth.
