Teeth Whitening

As we get older our teeth become darker. This is caused by various factors, such as highly coloured foods and drink, smoking and sometimes some antibiotics. Whitening is a non-invasive way of lightening the teeth and restoring them to nearer their original colour.

How does teeth whitening work?

The treatment can take between two to four weeks depending on how discoloured the teeth are and the shade you want to get to. Those patients with very thin enamel will find it harder to get a light shade, and also patients who clench or grind their teeth may find it takes longer to get a lighter effect. Sensitivity and soreness of the gum can be a problem but advice on managing these will be given by your dentist. This only happens during the treatment and generally resolves quickly after treatment has finished. Teeth Whitening only affects natural tooth so will not alter the shade of, for example, fillings or crowns. Further work may need to be done, at additional cost, to replace any restorations that no longer match. Whitening works really well for many people, and under proper supervision from your dentist is a good way to improve the appearance of your smile. Ask your dentist to assess you and explain how it will work for you.
